TalkaTree Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 18, 2026
INTRODUCTION
TalkaTree LLC (“TalkaTree,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the TalkaTree mobile application, website and related services (collectively, the “Services”). TalkaTree is the Digital Palaver Tree: a social platform where people across Africa and its diaspora connect through stories, conversations, culture and community.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and disclose it, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights available to you. It applies when you use our Services or communicate with us. It does not apply to third-party services that operate under their own privacy policies.
1. INFORMATION YOU PROVIDE
- Account and onboarding information, such as your name, username, email address, password or authentication credentials, country or region, language preferences, profile photo, biography and the Trees or interests you select.
- Profile and creator information, including public profile details, follower and following relationships, creator or community information, and information submitted when requesting or managing a Personalized Tree.
- Content and communications, including posts, comments, reactions, reposts, saved items, photos, videos, captions, private messages, voice notes and other material you create, upload, send or share.
- Invitations and contact information you choose to provide when inviting another person. We do not access your device contacts unless you choose a feature that requires access and grant permission.
- Support, safety and legal communications, including reports, appeals, account-deletion requests, feedback and correspondence with TalkaTree.
2. INFORMATION COLLECTED WHEN YOU USE TALKATREE
- Usage and interaction information, such as the content you view, Trees you join, accounts you follow, searches, likes, comments, shares, invitations, video-view activity and feature usage.
- Participation, engagement and recognition information generated from how you use and contribute to the Services.
- Device and technical information, such as device type, operating system, app version, language, IP address, device or application identifiers, network information and notification token.
- Diagnostics and security information, such as crash reports, performance logs, login records, suspected abuse signals and information needed to protect accounts and the Services.
- Approximate location inferred from information such as IP address or the country or region you select. TalkaTree does not collect precise device location unless a feature clearly requests it and you grant permission.
3. INFORMATION FROM OTHER SOURCES
- Authentication providers, such as Apple or Google, when you choose a third-party sign-in option. We receive only the information permitted by your settings and the provider.
- Other users, when they mention, tag, follow, invite, report or otherwise interact with you or your content.
- Service providers and security partners that help us detect fraud, diagnose problems, protect the Services or respond to lawful requests.
4. HOW WE USE PERSONAL INFORMATION
- Create, authenticate and manage accounts; save onboarding progress; and provide the features you request.
- Operate feeds, Trees, profiles, posting, messaging, invitations, notifications, search, discovery and community tools.
- Personalize content and recommendations using your selections, activity and interactions. We do not use engagement information as a measure of personal worth.
- Support community recognition, assess eligibility for creator opportunities, and review Personalized Tree requests.
- Translate content or communications when a translation feature is used. The relevant text may be processed by a service provider solely to provide the translation.
- Moderate content, investigate reports, enforce our Terms and Community Guidelines, prevent spam, fraud and abuse, and protect people, TalkaTree and the public.
- Send service messages, security alerts, requested notifications and information about material changes. Marketing communications, when used, include available opt-out controls.
- Measure performance, understand aggregate usage, fix errors, test features and improve the Services.
- Comply with law, respond to valid legal process, protect legal rights and resolve disputes.
5. HOW INFORMATION IS SHARED
- With other users and the public. Information you place on a public profile or publish publicly may be seen, copied, reshared or accessed outside TalkaTree. Content shared in a Tree is visible according to that Tree’s settings and the feature’s audience controls.
- With people you choose. Private messages and other restricted content are shared with their intended recipients. Recipients may save or reshare what they receive.
- With service providers. Vendors may process information for hosting, storage, content delivery, authentication, notifications, email, translation, analytics, security, moderation, customer support and crash diagnostics. They may use the information only to provide contracted services or as required by law.
- For safety and legal reasons. We may disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with law or valid legal process; enforce our rules; investigate fraud or abuse; or protect rights, safety and property.
- In a business transaction. Information may be transferred as part of a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization or sale of assets, subject to appropriate protections.
- With your direction or consent.
6. WHAT WE DO NOT DO
- We do not sell personal information for money.
- With your permission, measurement and advertising providers receive limited website events for campaign measurement and attribution. In some jurisdictions, this disclosure may be considered sharing for targeted advertising.
- We do not enable Automatic Advanced Matching or intentionally send names, email addresses, phone numbers or text entered in website forms to marketing pixels.
- We do not publicly promise financial rewards based on engagement or community recognition.
7. LEGAL BASES FOR PROCESSING
- Performance of a contract, when processing is necessary to provide the Services you request and administer your account.
- Legitimate interests, such as improving and securing the Services, preventing abuse, understanding use, communicating with members and supporting healthy communities, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Consent, when we ask for permission—for example, for certain device permissions, optional communications or optional website measurement and advertising technologies. You may withdraw consent through the available settings or by contacting us.
- Compliance with legal obligations and protection of vital or legal interests, when processing is necessary to comply with law, respond to lawful requests or protect people and rights.
8. RECOMMENDATIONS AND AUTOMATED PROCESSING
TalkaTree may use automated systems to organize feeds, recommend content, people or Trees, analyze participation and engagement signals, detect spam or suspicious behavior and support moderation. These systems may consider selections, interactions, content signals, language, region and account activity. TalkaTree does not use solely automated processing to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. Important eligibility and enforcement decisions may include human review.
9. PRIVATE MESSAGES AND MODERATION
Private messages are intended for their participants, but they are not represented as end-to-end encrypted. TalkaTree and its authorized service providers may process message data to deliver and secure messaging. We may review reported content and related context, or access information when reasonably necessary to investigate abuse, address security issues, provide requested support or comply with law.
10. DATA RETENTION
- Account information is generally retained while your account remains active.
- Public content, messages and interaction records are retained as needed to operate the Services, preserve conversation integrity and honor your settings, unless deleted earlier or required to be retained.
- Security, moderation, fraud-prevention, support and legal records may be retained for a limited period after the underlying issue is resolved when reasonably necessary to protect users, enforce our rules, establish legal claims or comply with law.
- Backups may retain residual copies for a limited period until they are overwritten through normal backup cycles.
- We may retain information in aggregated or de-identified form when it can no longer reasonably identify you.
11. ACCOUNT AND DATA DELETION
You may initiate deletion inside the TalkaTree app through Settings → Delete My Account, or use the Delete Account page at https://talkatree.com/delete-account if you cannot access the app. We may verify your identity before completing an external request.
Deletion begins after confirmation and removes or de-identifies the account and associated personal data from active systems as technically and legally appropriate, including user-generated content associated with the account. Limited information may be retained when required for security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, dispute resolution or enforcement, and residual copies may remain temporarily in backups. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
12. YOUR CHOICES AND PRIVACY RIGHTS
- Update certain account and profile information through the app.
- Control available notification, visibility, discovery and interaction settings.
- Unfollow, leave Trees, block accounts, remove content or delete your account using available controls.
- Request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of personal information, and object to or restrict certain processing where applicable.
- Withdraw consent where processing relies on consent. Withdrawal does not affect processing already completed.
- Appeal a refusal of a privacy request where applicable, and lodge a complaint with the appropriate privacy regulator.
13. CHILDREN AND TEEN USERS
TalkaTree is not intended for children under 13. A higher minimum age may apply where required by local law. If we learn that we collected personal information from a child who is not legally permitted to use the Services, we will take appropriate steps to delete it. Parents or guardians may contact privacy@talkatree.com with a concern. Teen users should use privacy and safety controls carefully and avoid sharing sensitive personal information publicly.
14. SECURITY
We use reasonable administrative, technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, including access controls and security monitoring. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for protecting your credentials and should notify us if you suspect unauthorized account access.
15. INTERNATIONAL DATA TRANSFERS
TalkaTree LLC is based in Washington State, United States. Your information may be processed in the United States and other countries where we or our service providers operate. Those countries may have different data-protection laws. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.
16. WEBSITE TECHNOLOGIES AND THIRD-PARTY LINKS
Our website uses necessary local storage to remember choices such as language and privacy preferences and to support basic operation. With your prior permission, it also loads optional measurement technologies from Google Analytics, Meta Pixel and TikTok Pixel. These tools may receive technical and interaction information such as your IP address, device and browser details, pages viewed, referring or campaign information, and clicks leading to the App Store or Google Play. We use this information to understand website traffic, attribute app-store clicks, measure campaign performance and improve TalkaTree promotions. These providers may place or read cookies and identifiers and process information under their own privacy policies.
Optional measurement technologies remain off unless you select “Analytics only” or “Allow all.” Selecting “Analytics only” enables Google Analytics while keeping Meta and TikTok advertising technologies off. You can refuse or withdraw consent at any time through “Privacy choices” in the website footer; refusing does not affect the website’s core functions. TalkaTree does not enable TikTok Automatic Advanced Matching and does not intentionally send the contents of contact or account-deletion forms to marketing pixels. You can also clear cookies and local storage through your browser settings.
The Services may link to third-party websites, app stores or social platforms. Their handling of information is governed by their own policies. Your mobile operating system also controls device permissions such as photos, camera, microphone and notifications; you can manage those permissions in device settings.
17. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
We may update this Privacy Policy as the Services, laws or our practices change. We will post the updated policy and revise the effective date. If a change is material, we will provide additional notice when required, such as through the app, website or email.
